Reading Response Guidelines

Over the past few weeks we have shared our thinking about The Book Thief that I have been reading aloud to you. Together we have done some really great thinking and talking about the novel. Now instead of only talking about your thinking, you're going to put your thinking down on paper. When you write about your thinking, you can remember it and share it with others who read it.

In our class this year, you're going to share your thinking by writing your thoughts in a letter to me in your reading journal. I will read your letter and write back to you.

Below is a submission schedule so that you know exactly when your letter is due.

Happy reading and writing about your reading!

Pythagorean Slam!

Pythagoras of Samos is joined on stage with his young son, Pythagoras Jr. and the rest of his crew, A-squared, B-squared and C-squared!

The boys were given the task of creating a rap/poem to teach (and entertain) their peers about the Pythagorean Theorem. As you can see, they they took this responsibility seriously and blew us away with their rhymes.........and knowledge. Be sure to catch this mathematical crew when they bring their act to a classroom near you!

Applying the Pythagorean Relationship

Now that you know the relationship between the legs of a right triangle and the hypotenuse, let's revisit our problem from last week.

Can you pass a 1.2m x 2.4m piece of plywood through a 1m x .75m window?

Population density of 30 countries

Over the past week or so, we've been learning about Population density in Geography class. Students have been tasked with labeling 30 countries on a map that they've been given. 22 countries have been provided while 8 countries are to be chosen by each individual. The permanent 22 are as follows:
  1. Australia
  2. Bangledesh
  3. Belgium
  4. Bermuda
  5. Brazil
  6. Canada
  7. China
  8. Egypt
  9. France
  10. Greenland
  11. Iceland
  12. Israel
  13. Japan
  14. Mongolia
  15. New Zealand
  16. Nigeria
  17. Russia
  18. Saudi Arabia
  19. Singapore
  20. Sudan
  21. United Kingdom
  22. United States of America
Map of the World
Remember, the student must find 8 countries that were not provided, find them on the map, and label them.

From Lonely Planet to Sardine Can

Today in Geography, the grade 8 class used a 40m square to represent the population density for some of our world's densest countries. Population density can be found by dividing a population (country or region) by the land area in which they live.

What would Windsor be like if our population density quadrupled?

What is your learning style?

This week students took a survey to see what elements of their intelligence are the strongest. We then graphed the results to show how each students brain differs. Here are some examples.

September News

With the beginning of the new school year upon us, I would like to welcome you and your child back to Dougall. I am looking forward to another great year. Grade 8 challenges children to grow as students and develop a stronger sense of responsibility for themselves. Please take a moment to read the following information to help get the year off to a great start.

Agendas
Once again this year, we will be offering agendas to the students. The school subsidizes the cost of the agenda, so the agendas only cost $5.00. Students are encouraged to use this tool everyday to stay organized.

Homework
Homework will be assigned everyday. This should take about 1hour per night and may include daily reading. Special projects or assignments that are not completed in class may add to this time. Please check your child's agenda or this site on a daily basis for homework updates.

Thanks,
M.Seal
