Applying the Pythagorean Relationship

Now that you know the relationship between the legs of a right triangle and the hypotenuse, let's revisit our problem from last week.

Can you pass a 1.2m x 2.4m piece of plywood through a 1m x .75m window?

    1. BUT WHY, JEFFRY, WHY?!?!? HOW CAN I KNOW YOU ARE CORRECT WITHOUT SHOWING YOUR WORK!? I'll back you this time.

AB and CD = 75 cm. AC and BD = 100 cm. 75cm squared = 5625 cm squared (I can't type alt codes, I'm on my netbook) 100 cm squared = 10 000 cm squared. The square route of 15 625 cm squared is 125 cm. AC = 125 cm. If you align the board so that the side equal to 120 cm is aligned with AC, you can slide it through the window frame with enough space on both ends to make up for the difference in angle of the two shapes.
