To cap off the last day of 2012 at Dougall, intermediate students will be treated to a delicious pasta lunch next Friday in room 205 during period 4 accompanied with buttered salad rolls and a drink. Afterwards, students will have the opportunity to engage in a Christmass classic two-ball soccer charity tournament for periods 5 and 6 in pursuit of having their names grace the coveted Dougall Cup. Winterfest 2012
Recently, two representatives from the DWBIA came to the school to expand more on a topic that's been thrown around for a while. The winterfest parade and celebration is an event being held by the Downtown Windsor Business Improvement association on the 15th of December and will have highlights such as a Parade, Ice scuptures, Carolers, Horse Drawn Carriages, and local retail, arts, and other goods. Students are allowed to volunteer for this event and the two DWBIA representatives were here to recruit us. Each student who wanted to volunteer got a form with which they confirmed what time and area they were available to volunteer during as well as communication information. They have also been sent home with a form for parents. On this form you need to fill in the repsective area for information on communcating with you. If you would like more information on the winterfest and DWBIA, go to this website Or this website here.

December Student of the Month
This morning I am pleased to present the first student of the month certificate to a student who is taking advantage of the educational opportunities before her. She has made a commitment to improving her learning skills and in doing so has witnessed gains in all subject areas. Most notable have been her recent successes in Math. Not satisfied with her marks, she sought extra support in class and practiced these skills each night and returned the following day with greater confidence ready to face the next challenge head on. Thank you for demonstrating initiative, diligence and responsibility Claudia Bitar.
Our next recipient quietly goes about his business but with maximum effort. From puppet shows to small skits in the classroom to performing in front of the entire school this young man loves to perform. He's been a terrific listener, completes his homework with care and currently holds one of the highest math marks in the entire intermediate division. He has consistantly modelled good citizenship and will be missed greatly when he moves on to high school next year. Congratulations Thomas Dalpe.

PIZZA DAY 2012 COMING SOON!
Very soon, on Friday, December 7th. the intermediates will be raising money and spirit with Pizza day.A flyer went home with your students recently in which there are two options. Combo 1 and combo 2. If you choose to order one (Or both) of these combos, the money will be donated to the 8th grade graduating field trip. Also, if we raise enough money, it is likely that we may donate to a charity as well. Combo 1 is a slice of cheese pizza and a drink box while combo 2 is the same as the first, with extra pizzas. The order form that has gone home with your child must be back by the 5th of December. The pizzas will be 35.56 cm in Diamaeter. See if you can figure out the rest of the measurements of the Pizza (Area, Circumference, Radius) if it were a perfect circle.
We look forward to Pizza day and the school spirit that comes with it. See you on monday!

Think Global Act Local
Next time you're in the downtown core, look for these well placed statistics that raise awareness about poverty in our city. Also, check out the website wereality.ca. There are some startling local stats on the issue. Perhaps some of this info could be used in a future writing assignment.

Dougall Delivers for Remembrance
This past week Dougall students had the opportunity to learn about Canada's role in military conflicts and peacekeeping missions worldwide. Students toured a transformed Library to examine artifacts, ask questions and listen to facilitators Sabriya, Shaun, Nick and Lisa talk about the sacrifices made by so many Canadians in times of conflict.
The library tour and classroom lessons culminated with a moving Remembrance ceremony in our gymnasium.
Here are a few pictures of 8S on their tour.

Student of the Month - OCTOBER
This morning I proudly presented the Student of the Month to two individuals that truly embody so many of the character traits we embrace here at Dougall.
Both of these individuals arrive each day prepared to learn and do whatever they can (sometimes asked, sometimes not) to help make our school a better place for everyone.
Our first recipient jumps at the chance to work collaboratively and relishes the microphone and the opportunity to entertain! He is a star at Dougall and will continue to star at whatever High School he chooses. Congratulations Armin Jusic.
Our next recipient has made a commitment to improve by staying organized. So far he has done a superb job handing in assignments on time and is experiencing academic success in grade 8. Additionally, he has consistently shown a willingness and knack for working collaboratively with his classmates to reach a common goal. Congratulations Jack Woodrow!

Media Assignment
MEDIA LITERACY
Advertisement
Students will work in groups to design a television, print, or radio ad that encourages people to settle in either Greenal or Graynel at the time of their development. The purpose is to encourage people to move to the island. The ads should focus on what the island has to offer and the values the island upholds. Students will create an outline for the ad and then create a draft. Students will either videotape their final commercials or present them live in class.Wednesday, 31 October 2012
